AlgaGen LLC has been involved in a number of consulting operations that have increased production, increased quality and reduced labor. The expertise behind the offer to evaluate algal production comes from 20 years experience with production, process and overall algal culturing experience for biotechnology companies, universities, and private companies. Current clients include Florida Institute of Technology, University of Miami, Shrimp Improvement System (Florida Keys), IboChem Natural Products, University of North Carolina Wilmington, the Oceanic Institute Kona Hawaii, Florida State University Marine Lab, and Southern Cross Sea Farms,Inc.

Starter cultures

AlgaGen LLC provides high quality starter cultures for use in hatcheries, research, and small scale aquarium production needs. Currently we have over 20 different types and are continuously adding to the collection.

Most cultures we receive come from successful aquaculture operations and have undergone some level of temperature acclimation. When we receive cultures they are subject to a rigorous regimen in order to get them clean. The cultures are not axenic but test clean on marine agar for 1-2 weeks.

Starter cultures are available in test tubes. We also produce plated cultures, which can be purchased through Aquatic Eco-Systems.

Bulk Hi-Density Cultures

Due to demand we have begun offering packages of our hi-density cultures. This has become a popular option because it enables a group to inoculate a number of production vessels (flasks, bottles, carboys, cylinders) without having to spend time on the labor intensive steps leading up to this point. It also saves valuable production space. The hi-density bulk culture is not as clean as the starter culture; it has slightly more bacteria, but never any ciliates or other species and is very acceptable to initiate production.

We have recently offered the option for hatcheries to sub-contract out their algae production to AlgaGen LLC. This offers great flexibility in that we can produce any one of a number of different desirous strains and deliver them to a facility at a scheduled time. This reduces the labor necessary to produce starter culture and subcontracts out the expertise for a fraction of the costs. The other advantage is that by committing to such an arrangement the facility gets a priority status that others do not receive due to the erratic demand for culture.
