AlgaGen has numerous microalgal strains in its collection. The more common aquaculture strains are in constant production, which means that they can usually be ordered and shipped the same day, a 24 hour turn-around. AlgaGen offers test tube cultures, flask cultures, hi-density cultures and a 18L hi- density culture with options for contract production services. Our cultures are clean, however, they are not axenic. We do not use antibiotics in our production processes in order not to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria. Our cultures are taken outside and grown routinely, brought back into the lab, cleaned and re-isolated. They are production performer.

Copepods:

AlgaGen’s copepod collection is a work in progress and is the largest publicly accessible collection around. We offer calanoids (pelagic) and harpacticoids (benthic) for aquaculture as well as for aquatic toxicology and research (ballast water studies). We typically sell copepods by the thousands up to the millions. We also offer copepod (Acartia tonsa) eggs that can be hatched out as needed.
The benefits of using copepods, aquacultured copepods, are starting to become appreciated. The use of copepods as a food translates into greater survivals, better response to environmental stresses, enhanced coloration, better egg quality, etc. It is not necessary to utilize copepods the same way one would a rotifer or brine. Current thinking is that the use of copepods may only be necessary as a means of breaking through metamorphic/developmental bottle necks. Instead of setting aside hatchery space to culture a lot of microalgae, and tank space to hold enough volume with which to culture a daily supply of copepods, it may only be necessary to purchase enough copepods for a 1-3 day feeding supply at 0.25-0.5/mL. Of course another advantage of using copepods is that the nauplii (infantile stages) are small. The size of the copepod nauplii can be smaller than the size of the rotifer.

Rotifers are a staple of the aquaculture world and can be raised in super hi-densities ranging in the 1000’s per mL.  This is not our forte but we do maintain clean stock cultures of both S-strain and L-strain rotifers that are perfect for restarting your production.

Larger volume/hi-density cultures can be ordered with advanced notice, otherwise regular density cultures can be shipped the same day.

Decapsulated Brine (Decap’D Brine):

AlgaGen has been offering a Brine decapsulation service since 2007.  Decapsulation is a process that uses bleach to remove, “burn-off”,  the coryon,  outlayer of the brine cyst.  It is an established procedure that has been used in aquaculture hatcheries for decades.  The advantage of decapsulating is the removal of the coryon, which is usually associated with bacterial and fungal contaminations.  Removal of the coryon also removes a particulate from the production system. It negates a potential biological fouling agent as well as a non-digestible prey item that can cause problems with larvae.

AlgaGen has been decapsulating all levels of Artemia (50-90% hatch) cyst for Federal Hatcheries to small aquaculture companies.  Decapsulated brine is used in Aquaria as a coral food as well.  Unlike our ability to turn-around microalgae and copepod orders within 24 hrs, decapsulation takes time.  We do not keep dried cysts in inventory and so there is a lead time of 10 days.  We decapsulate in 2 can increments.
